Q&A With Dr. Holly Volz

Off

Dr. Holly Volz, board-certified dermatologist, will be joining the practice later this month. In anticipation of her arrival, we asked her some questions that aren’t necessarily covered in her official biography.

What drew you to the field of dermatology?

My grandfather and my mother are both physicians. I knew from a very early age that I wanted to follow in their footsteps. Dermatology integrates the aspects of medicine that I value most — the ability to care for patients of all ages through every stage of life, the variety of acute and chronic disease, and the means to diagnose, treat, and cure cancer on a regular basis.

I love the variety that dermatology offers in my day to day practice, and I appreciate that patients are invested in their healing. Dermatology is intellectually stimulating and personally gratifying. I truly cannot imagine a better fit!

What’s the most satisfying aspect of your job?

Undoubtedly, I love the relationships I cultivate with my patients the most. The ability to walk alongside my patients through every season of life is the greatest blessing. We grow together, celebrate together, laugh together, and sometimes even cry together. I count it all as the greatest privilege.

What do you recommend to all of your dermatology patients?

Sun protection doesn’t just mean sunscreen. And it’s important for every single person, no matter your skin type. Find easy ways to ensure you’re protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays on a daily basis. This may mean investing in a few wide brimmed hats (for the ladies, my favorite brand EVER is Eric Javits), lightweight clothing (check out Coolibar for adults and Blue Quail Clothing for the kids), and sun protective gear (Neso Beach Tents are cool!). Regardless of your approach, stay consistent. The investment is worth it!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spending time with my husband and my two children is my greatest treasure. We love to eat well (I am currently enjoying cooking out of the Defined Dish Cookbook, as well as Half Baked Harvest’s Super Simple Cookbook), traveling (our family favorite vacation spots include Breckenridge, CO; Seaside, FL; Kauaii, HI), and spending time outdoors (running, visiting the beach, hunting/riding horses at the family ranch).

Tell us three surprising facts about yourself.

  • After playing college baseball at Baylor University (go Bears!), my husband played professional baseball while I was in medical school. It was a crazy, fun, but also trying experience. We lived in several states, made some good friends, and I learned a LOT about baseball.
  • I am the oldest of four girls, and our names all start with H. Talk about a tongue twister!
  • I love to teach, and I feel that mentoring/training up the next generation of physicians is very important. It is an important part of what I do!

What goals are on your “wish list?”

  • I have a growing appreciation for art, but I don’t know very much about it. I hope to take art lessons soon! Definitely on the bucket list.
  • My family and I love the movie The Sound of Music. I hope to travel to Austria one day to see many of the places where they filmed.
  • I would love to write a book one day. I enjoy writing, and I would love to be able to share my family’s story of God’s faithfulness!
